CHOMSKY, LES MÉDIAS ET LES ILLUSIONS NÉCESSAIRES
Mark Achbar, Peter Wintonick
Canada, 1998
documentary
Peter Wintonick and Mark Achbar made this penetrating documentary about the career and views of linguist and media critic Noam Chomsky. While the man is the subject of the movie, the filmmakers wisely and carefully choose not to make Chomsky more important than his insights into the way print and electronic journalism tacitly and often willingly further the agendas of the powerful. We learn a lot about Chomsky's formative experiences as a child, student, academic, activist, and politician (he has campaigned for office), but we learn just as much about the media institutions that deny him access today, from ABC to PBS. The centerpiece of the film, arguably, is a long examination into the history of the New York Times' coverage of Indonesia's atrocity-ridden occupation of East Timor, reportage that (as Chomsky shows us) was absolutely in lock step with the government's unwillingness to criticize an ally.

COCA, LA COLOMBE DE TCHETCHENIE
Eric Bergkraut
Switzerland, 2005
documentary
For years Zainap Gashaeva has been documenting what is a daily occurrence in her home country of Chechnya: abduction, torture and murder. What President Putin deems “anti-terrorist action” looks increasingly like genocide. The world stays silent, be it out of helplessness, ignorance or opportunism. Filmmaker Bergkraut follows Gashaeva, nicknamed Coca – the dove – as she fights for an international tribunal. Is she tilting at windmills?

TROIS JOURS
Trys Dienos
Sharunas Bartas
Lithuania, 1990
drama
In Kaliningrad two Lithuanian boys meet two Russian girls. They have difficulties in finding places where they can sleep together. But this is the only problem they do solve. All four justly feel miserable because their lives are meaningless (the recurrent dull and poorly kept house façads could well be taken as a comparative symbol). In addition, everyone is so absorbed by his or her own distress and hardly capable of bothering about the anguish of the others. The three days end with a pervasive lack of contact.

documentary

ALICE
Jan Svankmajer
Tchechoslovaquia, 1988
animation
A memorably bizarre screen version of Lewis Carroll's novel 'Alice in Wonderland', mixing one live actor (Alice) with a huge variety of sinister animated puppets, ranging from the complex (the White Rabbit) to the incredibly simple (the Caterpillar, consisting of a sock, a couple of glass eyes and a pair of false teeth). The original story is followed reasonably faithfully, though those familiar with this director's other films won't be the least bit surprised by the numerous digressions into Svankmajer territory, living slabs of meat and all. As the opening narration says, it's a film made for children... perhaps?
KEBAB CONNECTION
Anno Saul
Germany, 2007
comedy
Kebab Connection is a crazily comedic tale of two fast food stands (one Turkish, the other Greek), a frustrated filmmaker, the coolest commercial of all time, intercultural love, forbidden romance and centuries-old Aegean rivalry.
GAMBLING GODS AND LSD
Peter Mettler
Switzerland, Canada, 2002
documentary
A three hour flow, following the invisible currents which interconnect people through culture and time. The land of Toronto, Nevada, Switzerland, South India. The smell of ecstasy, plastic, sex, dust and divinity. An associative tableau portaying the inexhaustible pursuits within which we attempt to bring meaning into our lives. A filmmakers journey which blends documentary observation with the logic of lyricism, the movements of music, probing to bring back a sense of wonder in everyday life.

Installed in the Tenderloin, she peeps in on neighbors' bizarre sex rituals as well as does sightseeing of the more traditional kind. But encounters with male impersonator Ramona, charming Hungarian bohemian Dominique, and Susie Sexpert, barker for an all-girl strip show, lead to exploratory adventures of self-discovery and fun. MY FATHER IS COMING
Vicky works as a waitress and dreams of stardom, but her hopes are continually dashed by disastrous auditions and an unconquerable German accent. Her world threatens to disintegrate when she learns of the impending visit of her father, lured by stories of his daughter's success in America. Vicky's attempts to dissimulate include concealing her job and inducing gay roommate Ben to pose as her husband. Bavarian sausage-smuggling Hans, Vicky's father, arrives and encounters an exotic subculture of gender-benders, fakirs, and, most of all, ex-porn queen Annie Sprinkle (playing herself), leading to discovery and adventure for both father and daughter.
SEDUCTION-THE CRUEL WOMAN
Wanda is a dominatrix who runs a gallery in a building on the Hamburg waterfront, where audiences pay for the privilege of watching her humiliate her slaves. She is a business woman who smashes sexual stereotypes and social taboos with icy self-possession and an enigmatic smile.
As artistshe specializes in the staging of elaborate S & M fantasies and her affairs transgress the usual boundaries of personal and professional life. Along the way she leaves her German lesbian lover, a shoe fetishist, for an American "trainee," and does more than step on the toes of the male performer who has broken the rules of the master-slave relationship by falling in love with her.
GENDERNAUTS

YONDEN
In 1992, Marie Jaoul de Poncheville directed Molom, a tale of Mongolia. This traditional tale told the story of a young boy and a Shaman incarnated by Tsedecol. Since then, Tsedecol has passed away. But the film-maker has kept in touch with the child, thanks to Doctor Alain Cantero, who goes regularly to care for the nomads in the region. Nine years later, she returns to see Yönden. THE DESERT ARK
Romeo and Juliet in the Algerian desert. Amin and Myriam are secretly in love. Their families are rivals and when their relationship is discovered, conflict is inevitable. In the quiet atmosphere of the palm groves, the two communities have long nurtured the seeds of discord and hatred. The persecution is the first signal of inevitable evil. From inside the cave where they have taken refuge, the two young people hear the cries of a senseless murderous raid. A universal metaphor to denounce the horror of all extremist violence, The Desert Ark is a splendid and terrifying metaphor for a burning contemporary reality.
YOUCEF
The conflict between the adherents of the new anti-modern version of Islam which is sometimes called "fundamentalist" and everyone else is the theme of this drama. In the story, Youcef (Mohamed Ali Allalou) fought valiantly against the French in the 1950s on behalf of Algerian independence. During the fighting, he received a head wound which left him amnesiac, and he has been in an asylum ever since. Somehow he regains his memory and surveys the present scene in his country. He perceives the fundamentalists to be every bit as great a threat to the freedoms he fought for as the French ever were, and enters into the fray against them. That the conflict in Algeria is real and bloody is witnessed by the dedication of this film to two men who were recently assassinated for their anti-fundamentalist convictions.
THE CITADEL
This grim drama reflects the inequity and hypocrisy of polygamous Arabs and their attitudes towards women. Sidi (Djillali Ain-Tedeles) oppresses his three wives to the point where one is so depressed she considers suicide. He beats his adoptive son Kaddour (Khaied Barkat) when the boy shows romantic sentimentality towards a married woman. Sidi then seduces the same woman while Kaddour performs magic to win the woman's love. Sidi and his pals spend carefree days while the women cook and weave, clad in veils that cover their entire bodies. Sidi declares he will give up his wives if he does not marry off Kaddour within a day. Kaddour is forced to go through an elaborate ceremony that humiliates him in front of the entire village and leads to tragedy.
